What does "Incompatible FML modded server" mean?
It means the Forge server you're trying to join has a different set of mods (or mod versions) than your game, so the two can't talk to each other. FML is Forge Mod Loader, the part of Forge that loads mods and checks them when you connect. Before you even click "Join Server", your game reads the server's mod list from the server list ping and compares it with your own. If they don't fit, the server gets a red mark and this tooltip.
Forge uses several related messages, depending on where and when it notices the difference:
| Message | Where you see it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Incompatible FML modded server |
Tooltip in the "Multiplayer" server list | Your mods don't match the server's |
Server mod list is not compatible |
Server list tooltip, extra line | Some mods are missing on one side or differ in version |
Server network message list is not compatible |
Server list tooltip, extra line | Mods use different network channels – often the same mod in different versions |
Connection closed - mismatched mod channel list |
Disconnect screen when joining (older Forge, e.g. 1.16) | Same as above, found during the login handshake |
| A table with "Mod name", "You need", "You have", "Server has" | Disconnect screen (newer Forge versions) | The exact list of missing and mismatched mods |
Incompatible Vanilla server |
Server list tooltip | The server runs without Forge, but your mods expect it |
The newer mismatch screen is the most helpful: it tells you which mods you're missing ("Your client is missing the following mods…"), which you must remove ("The server is missing the following mods…") and which have a different version ("The following mod versions do not match…"). If the list is long, it says how many more are in latest.log.
Why it happens
Almost always one of four things: a different modpack version, a mod you added or removed, a different Minecraft or loader version, or a different loader altogether.
- The server updated the modpack, you didn't (or the other way round). Even a minor pack update changes mod versions, and Forge compares versions too.
- You added a content mod – something that adds blocks, items, mobs or commands – that the server doesn't have. Mods like that must be installed on both sides.
- You removed or disabled a mod from the pack that the server still runs.
- Different Minecraft version or loader. A 1.20.1 pack and a 1.21.1 pack never match. Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are separate loaders – a Fabric client can't join a Forge server, and the mods of one don't work on another. See Forge vs NeoForge vs Fabric.
Client-only mods – minimaps, shader loaders, inventory or HUD tweaks, performance mods that only touch rendering – usually don't cause this error, because they don't need the server to know about them. Mods that add content or new network messages do.
How to fix it as a player
Install exactly the same modpack version as the server, from the launcher, without changes – then add only client-side extras. This solves nearly every case.
1. Ask for the exact pack name and version
"All the Mods 10" isn't enough; you need the version, for example 5.1. The server owner can see it in their hosting panel or in the pack's files. Server lists and Discord announcements often say it too.
2. Install that version in your launcher
- CurseForge app: search for the modpack, open it and pick the version from the list of files (not just "Install" with the newest one), then click "Play".
- Modrinth App and Prism Launcher: they also let you pick a specific pack version when installing or changing an instance's version.
- Already have the pack installed? Change its version in the profile settings, or create a fresh profile with the right version. A fresh profile is the cleanest – old mods you added won't sneak in.
3. Compare the lists if it still fails
If you play with your own mod list (not a ready modpack), the mismatch screen in newer Forge versions tells you exactly what to install, remove or update. On older versions, compare the server's mods folder with yours – file by file, including version numbers in the file names. The plain disconnect message in older Forge versions doesn't name the mod, but logs/latest.log in your game folder usually does.
4. Match the Minecraft and loader version
The profile must use the same Minecraft version and the same loader as the server. The loader version should also be the one the pack was made for – modpack launchers set it automatically, so if you built your own profile, check it there.
5. Remove extras one by one
If you added your own mods to a pack and the error appeared, remove them and try again. Add them back one at a time to find the one the server doesn't accept.
"Incompatible Vanilla server"
Your game has Forge with mods, but the server runs plain Minecraft (or a plugin server such as Paper). You can join only if your mods are client-only. To play on that server, start a vanilla profile in the launcher with the server's Minecraft version.
What about Fabric?
Fabric doesn't use FML, so you won't see these exact messages there. Missing or mismatched content mods on Fabric usually show up as a disconnect when joining or as errors in the log. The fix is the same: same pack version, same Minecraft version, same mods on both sides.
If the game crashes instead of showing a mismatch, see Minecraft Exit Code 1.
How to fix it as a server owner
Make it easy for players to get exactly your setup: give them the pack name and version, and tell them whenever you update.
- Announce updates. When you update the modpack on the server, players have to update too. Post the new version on Discord before the restart.
- Don't mix your own content mods into a public pack unless you publish the full list. Every extra content mod on the server is a mod every player must install.
- Keep client-only mods off the server – they don't help there and some prevent the server from starting.
- Same loader and Minecraft version as the pack. If you built the server yourself, check that the loader version matches what the pack requires.
- For the full setup, see how to make a modded Minecraft server.
Mod mismatch on a Spot.gg server
On Spot.gg the panel tells your players exactly which pack and version to install, and installs the matching server side for you.
- "How to connect?" next to the server address opens the connection instructions. For a modpack server they show the pack name to search for in CurseForge Launcher or Modrinth App, the exact version to install, and a warning: "A different pack version than on the server = an error when connecting." For a server with your own mods, they tell players to create a profile with exactly the same engine and version and the same mod list. There's also a button to send these instructions to your friends.
- One-click modpack servers. Pick a ready modpack and the panel installs the loader, mods and configuration. The catalog has over 1 300 modpacks – see modpacks on Spot.gg or our pick of the best Minecraft modpacks.
- Updating the pack. In "Information" → "Profile" → "Modify", the "Update" option switches to a newer or older version of the current pack; the world is preserved. After updating, tell your players the new version.
- Players without Forge. When a player tries to join without Forge installed, the panel reports "Game client incompatibility" in "Detected errors" (the bug icon), with the player's name, so you know who needs help.
Modpack servers on Spot.gg start from $7.55 per month with 6 GB RAM, and you can try one free for 24 hours.
FAQ
What does "Incompatible FML modded server" mean?
The Forge server has a different set of mods or mod versions than your game. Install the same modpack version as the server, on the same Minecraft version and loader, and the red mark disappears.
How do I fix "Connection closed - mismatched mod channel list"?
It's the same mismatch, found while joining on older Forge versions such as 1.16. Install the server's exact modpack version, remove content mods the server doesn't have, and check logs/latest.log for the mod name.
Can I add my own mods to a modpack and still join the server?
Client-only mods such as minimaps or shader loaders usually yes. Mods that add blocks, items, mobs or new features must also be on the server, otherwise you get a mismatch.
Why does the server show "Incompatible FML modded server" right after an update?
The server and your game now have different pack versions. Update the pack in your launcher to the same version the server runs.
Can a Fabric client join a Forge server?
No. Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are different loaders with different mods. You need a profile with the same loader as the server.
Does "Incompatible FML modded server" mean the server is down?
No. Your game could reach the server – that's how it got the mod list. It only means your mods don't match, so it's not a connection problem like getsockopt.
