Forge, NeoForge or Fabric – which should you choose?
Choose the loader your mods or modpack are made for; if you're starting fresh, pick NeoForge for big content mods on 1.21.1+, Fabric for lightweight and performance mods or the newest Minecraft versions, and Forge for older versions like 1.12.2, 1.16.5 and 1.20.1. The loader isn't a matter of taste – a Fabric mod won't start on Forge, and since 1.20.2 most Forge mods won't start on NeoForge either.

What is Forge?
Forge (Minecraft Forge) is the oldest mod loader, used since the early 2010s, with the largest collection of mods and modpacks for older Minecraft versions. Classic packs like RLCraft (1.12.2) and Better MC 4 (1.20.1) run on it.
In our catalog Forge dominates by sheer history: 1,022 of the modpacks run on it, mostly on 1.20.1 (262 packs), 1.12.2 (261) and 1.16.5 (146). Forge still gets builds for new versions, but most big mod authors moved their new releases to NeoForge.
What is NeoForge and how is it different from Forge?
NeoForge is a fork of Forge created in July 2023 by most of the Forge development team; it started on 1.20.1 and has gone its own way since 1.20.2. On 1.20.1 NeoForge could still load most Forge mods, but from 1.20.2 on they're separate loaders: a mod built for one generally won't start on the other.
Why NeoForge matters for a new server: most large content mods on recent versions ship for NeoForge, and so do the big packs – All the Mods 10, Better MC 5 and the Pixelmon Modpack all run on NeoForge 1.21.1. In our catalog 152 of the 171 NeoForge modpacks are on 1.21.1.
Forge or NeoForge? On 1.20.1 and older, Forge (the mods for those versions are made for it). On 1.20.2 and newer, NeoForge, unless a specific mod or pack you want exists only for Forge.
What is Fabric?
Fabric is a lightweight mod loader that updates to new Minecraft versions very quickly and has a huge range of performance, quality-of-life and technical mods. Almost every Fabric mod also needs the Fabric API library.
Fabric is the go-to loader for:
- the newest Minecraft versions – Fabric mods often update within days of a release,
- performance – Lithium and FerriteCore on the server, Sodium and Iris on the client,
- "Vanilla+" servers – small mods that keep the feel of Vanilla,
- packs like Prominence II (Fabric 1.20.1) and Cobblemon packs such as COBBLEVERSE.
Fabric vs Forge: which is better for a server?
Neither is better in general – Fabric is lighter and faster to update, Forge and NeoForge have more of the big content mods (tech, magic, dimensions). For a server, the deciding factor is always the mod list:
| You want to play… | Pick |
|---|---|
| A specific modpack | The loader the pack uses (it's installed for you) |
| Big tech/magic mods (Create add-ons, Mekanism, Ars Nouveau…) on 1.21.1 | NeoForge |
| Classic packs and mods on 1.12.2 or 1.16.5 | Forge |
| Mods on 1.20.1 | Forge (most content) or Fabric (most performance mods) |
| The newest Minecraft version with a few mods | Fabric |
| Vanilla with performance and quality-of-life mods | Fabric |
| Cobblemon | Fabric or NeoForge |
Many popular mods are released for more than one loader – Create (Forge and NeoForge), Simple Voice Chat and JourneyMap (all three), for example. Always check the mod page for the loader and Minecraft version of each file.
Can you use Fabric mods on Forge or NeoForge?
Not directly. Each mod is compiled against its loader's code, so a Fabric .jar in the mods folder of a Forge or NeoForge server will either be ignored or crash the start.
The one exception worth knowing: Sinytra Connector with Forgified Fabric API can load many Fabric mods on NeoForge. It works for a lot of simpler mods, but not all of them, and every player needs the same setup – treat it as a last resort, not a plan for a whole server.
Mods and plugins don't mix either: Paper plugins don't run on any of these loaders. For permissions on a modded server use the LuckPerms mod. The plugin side is covered in Minecraft server software.
Which loader is fastest?
On its own Fabric starts fastest and uses the least memory, but on a real server the mods matter far more than the loader. A Fabric server with 300 mods is not lighter than a NeoForge server with 150. What actually helps:
- performance mods – Lithium on Fabric, FerriteCore and ModernFix on all three loaders,
- pre-generating the map before players explore, so the server doesn't generate chunks under load,
- a sensible view and simulation distance in "Configuration",
- enough RAM – but not too much: once the server has what it needs, more memory doesn't remove lag.
How much RAM does a modded server need?
On Spot.gg every server on Forge, NeoForge or Fabric starts at 6 GB ($7.55 per month); larger modpacks get their recommended RAM from the catalog. Rough guide:
| Server | RAM |
|---|---|
| A few to a few dozen mods, small group | 6 GB |
| A medium pack (100–200 mods) | 8 GB ($9.63 / month) |
| A big pack (300+ mods) or more players | 10–12 GB (from $10.68 / month) |
The first 24 hours are free, so you can test the pack before paying. RAM can be changed at any time with "Change parameters".
How do you set up a server on each loader?
Pick a modpack (the loader comes with it) or pick the Forge, NeoForge or Fabric engine and the Minecraft version in the wizard, then add mods in the "Addons" tab.
- Modpack – search the modpack catalog; the loader, version and mods are installed in one go.
- Own mods – choose Forge, NeoForge or Fabric and the version your mods support.
- Install mods – the "Addons" tab lists only files for your loader and version and hides client-only mods. You can also upload your own
.jarfiles to themodsfolder in "Files". - Players – create a profile with the same loader and version in their launcher and add the same mods.
The full walkthrough, including fixing a server that won't start, is in how to make a modded Minecraft server.
Can you switch a server from Forge to NeoForge or Fabric?
Only with a reinstall, and a modded world doesn't carry over between loaders. The mods are different files with different saved data, so blocks and items from the old mods would disappear or break the world. If you want to switch loaders, start a fresh world (keep a backup of the old one). The world-preserving "Change engine" in the panel works from Vanilla to a loader on the same version, not between loaders.
FAQ
Is NeoForge better than Forge?
For Minecraft 1.20.2 and newer, usually yes – that's where most new big mods and packs are released. For 1.20.1 and older, Forge has more mods.
Can NeoForge run Forge mods?
On 1.20.1 NeoForge can load most Forge mods. From 1.20.2 onward, no – they're separate loaders and you need the NeoForge build of each mod.
Is Fabric or Forge better for performance?
Fabric is lighter by itself, but the mod list decides. A well-chosen NeoForge or Forge pack with performance mods can run just as smoothly.
Do players need the same loader as the server?
Yes. Players need the same loader, the same Minecraft version and the same mods (except client-only ones like shaders or minimaps). With a modpack, they just install the same pack version.
What about Quilt?
Quilt is a fork of Fabric. We don't offer it as a separate engine; for Fabric-style mods choose Fabric.
Which loader is best for a server with friends?
The one your chosen modpack uses. If you're building your own mod list on 1.21.1, NeoForge has the most big content mods and Fabric the most lightweight ones – both work well for a friends' server.
