How to Make a Cobblemon Server (Fabric or NeoForge)

Cobblemon is the Pokémon-inspired mod for Minecraft Java: catch, train and battle Pokémon in your own world. A Cobblemon server lets your friends do it together. We checked which Cobblemon packs our players actually run, what's inside the official modpack, how much RAM you need and how to set it all up step by step.

How do you make a Cobblemon server?

The easiest way is to pick a Cobblemon modpack (the official one or COBBLEVERSE) when you create the server – the host installs the right loader, Minecraft version and mods for you. Then each player installs the same pack in their launcher and joins with the server address.

On Spot.gg it looks like this:

  1. Create an account and click "Activate a free server", then choose Minecraft.
  2. Pick a modpack – type "Cobblemon" in the search or open Cobblemon Official Modpack (NeoForge) or COBBLEVERSE in the catalog.
  3. Set the RAM – the wizard starts with the pack's recommended memory.
  4. Wait for the install and copy the server address from the panel.
  5. Click "How to connect?" next to the address: it shows the exact pack and version your friends need.

The first 24 hours are free, without a card. After that a Cobblemon server with 8 GB of RAM costs $9.63 per month.

What is Cobblemon and which versions does it run on?

Cobblemon is a free Minecraft Java mod that adds Pokémon you can catch, train, battle and ride, built to fit Minecraft's own style. The current version in our catalog, Cobblemon 1.8.4 (released 27 October 2026), runs on Minecraft 1.21.1 with Fabric or NeoForge.

Details
Current version 1.8.4, Minecraft 1.21.1
Loaders Fabric and NeoForge (the same mod in two builds)
Required library Fabric: Fabric API; NeoForge: Kotlin for Forge
Where it runs Server and every player's game
Bedrock / consoles No – Java Edition only

Older Cobblemon versions also existed for Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1 (our catalog still has the Cobblemon Official Modpack [Forge] in version 1.5.2), but new releases come out only for Fabric and NeoForge. For a new server pick one of those two.

Which Cobblemon modpack should you choose?

For classic Cobblemon with quality-of-life extras pick the official modpack; for a full Pokémon adventure with regions, gyms and a story pick COBBLEVERSE; for Cobblemon mixed with hundreds of other mods pick a big pack like BigChadGuys Plus. These are the Cobblemon packs launched most often on Spot.gg:

Modpack Loader and version Servers on Spot.gg Recommended RAM
Cobblemon Official Modpack (NeoForge) NeoForge 1.21.1 92 8 GB
Cobblemon Official Modpack (Forge) Forge 1.20.1 (older version) 64 6 GB
Cobblemon Official Modpack (Fabric) Fabric 1.21.1 40 10 GB
COBBLEVERSE – Pokemon Adventure Fabric 1.21.1 34 10 GB
BigChadGuys Plus (w/ Cobblemon!) Fabric 1.20.1, 320 mods 22 10 GB
Cobblemon Realms NeoForge 1.21.1, 316 mods 12 10 GB

Server counts come from our database (all servers ever launched with the pack, October 2026). The catalog has many more Cobblemon packs – search for "Cobblemon" in the modpack catalog.

What's inside the official Cobblemon modpack?

The official pack is Cobblemon plus a set of quality-of-life, map and performance mods – 75 mods in total in version 1.8.4 for Fabric, of which 34 run on the server. We went through the pack's own file list (Modrinth, Fabric Loader 0.20.1, Minecraft 1.21.1):

  • Cobblemon 1.8.4 and Fabric API,
  • recipes and info: JEI and EMI, Enchantment Descriptions, AppleSkin,
  • maps: Xaero's Minimap and Xaero's World Map,
  • server performance: Lithium, FerriteCore, Krypton, Clumps,
  • client-only graphics: Sodium, Iris, the Complementary Reimagined shader pack, Entity Culling, falling leaves, footsteps and other visual mods.

The client-only mods stay on the players' PCs; the server only loads what it needs, so you don't have to remove anything by hand.

What about COBBLEVERSE?

COBBLEVERSE is a Cobblemon adventure pack on Fabric 1.21.1 that turns the game into a full Pokémon journey. According to the pack's description it adds custom Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh regions with Gym Leaders, the Elite Four and Champions, Pokémon Centers and Poké Marts, raids, and turns off classic Minecraft mobs and hunger by default. Our catalog has version 1.7.42 (built on Cobblemon 1.7.3), and the pack is also available as a Modrinth edition – players must use the same edition and version as the server.

Fabric or NeoForge for Cobblemon?

Both run the same Cobblemon; choose by the other mods you want. If you just play a modpack, the loader is already decided for you.

  • Fabric – lighter, with many performance mods; most Cobblemon add-on packs (COBBLEVERSE, BigChadGuys Plus) are Fabric.
  • NeoForge – pick it if you want to combine Cobblemon with big NeoForge mods like Create-based or tech mods, or packs like Cobblemon Realms.

A Fabric mod won't load on NeoForge and vice versa – more in Forge vs NeoForge vs Fabric.

How much RAM does a Cobblemon server need?

6–8 GB for the official modpack with a few friends, 10 GB or more for COBBLEVERSE and big packs with 300+ mods. Spot.gg starts every modpack at 6 GB ($7.55 per month) and suggests the pack's recommended memory in the wizard.

Server RAM Price on Spot.gg
Official modpack, 2–5 players 8 GB $9.63 / month
COBBLEVERSE, BigChadGuys Plus, Cobblemon Realms 10 GB $10.68 / month
Big pack, 10+ players, wide exploration 12 GB+ $11.98 / month

Exploring new chunks is the heaviest part of Cobblemon, because every new area spawns Pokémon and structures. If the server lags when players fly around, lower the view distance in "Configuration" before adding RAM. You can change RAM at any time with "Change parameters".

How do you add Cobblemon to your own server without a modpack?

Create a server on Fabric or NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1, then install Cobblemon and its library from the "Addons" tab and restart.

  1. In the wizard choose the Fabric or NeoForge engine and Minecraft 1.21.1.
  2. In the server panel open "Addons", search for "Cobblemon" and click "Install".
  3. Install the required library: Fabric API on Fabric, or Kotlin for Forge on NeoForge.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Players create a profile with the same loader and version in their launcher and add the same Cobblemon and library versions.

Already have a Fabric or NeoForge 1.21.1 server with other mods? Add Cobblemon the same way – the world stays, and Pokémon start spawning in newly generated areas as well as existing ones.

How do your friends join a Cobblemon server?

They install the same modpack and version in the CurseForge App or Modrinth App, start the game from it and add your server address under "Multiplayer". If the pack version differs from the server's, the game refuses the connection with a mod mismatch error.

When the modpack updates, update the server too ("Information" → "Profile" → "Modify" → "Update") and tell your friends to update their launcher profile at the same time. Step by step for any server in how to join a Minecraft server.

How do you manage a Cobblemon server?

Cobblemon is configured in the config/cobblemon folder, and admins use commands like /pokegive, /pokegiveother and /pokespawn. Some practical tips:

  • Settings – edit the files in config/cobblemon in the "Files" tab with the server stopped, then start it again. Keep a copy of the original first.
  • Admin commands – /pokegive <pokemon> gives you a Pokémon, /pokegiveother <player> <pokemon> gives one to another player and /pokespawn <pokemon> spawns one next to you. They need OP – see Minecraft server commands.
  • Backups before updates – Cobblemon updates can change how Pokémon are saved. On a paid Spot.gg server backups run daily, and you can make one by hand with "Create backup" before updating.
  • Keep inventory – useful on servers where players carry Poké Balls and rare items; see Minecraft gamerules.

FAQ

Is Cobblemon free?

Yes. Cobblemon and its official modpack are free on CurseForge and Modrinth. You only pay for the server if you host one – on Spot.gg after the free 24-hour trial.

Can Bedrock or console players join a Cobblemon server?

No. Cobblemon is a Java Edition mod, and every player needs it installed in their game. Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players can't join.

Does Cobblemon work on Paper or with plugins?

No. Cobblemon needs Fabric or NeoForge. Paper runs plugins, not mods. For permissions or protection use server-side mods instead of plugins.

Cobblemon or Pixelmon – which is better for a server?

Both are good, but they're separate mods that can't share a world. Cobblemon runs on Fabric and NeoForge and has many community packs; Pixelmon runs on NeoForge. Our Pixelmon modpack guide compares them in detail.

Can I move my singleplayer Cobblemon world to a server?

Yes. Use the same pack or mods and version, zip the world from your saves folder, upload it in the "Files" tab, extract it and set the folder name in "Configuration" → "World name".

How many players can a Cobblemon server handle?

It depends on RAM, CPU and how much players explore. For a group of friends 8–10 GB is plenty; for 15+ active players start at 12 GB and keep the view distance moderate.
