Texture pack or resource pack – what's the difference?
They're the same thing: "resource pack" is the official name in Minecraft Java, and "texture pack" is the older name people still use. A resource pack can replace textures, models, sounds, fonts, language files and even some visual effects – not only textures.
A resource pack is a .zip file (or a folder) with a pack.mcmeta file and an assets folder inside. It only changes what you see and hear. It can't add new blocks, items or mobs – that's what mods are for (see How to install Minecraft mods).
Minecraft Java comes with three built-in packs you can switch on right away:
| Built-in pack | What it does |
|---|---|
| Default | The normal look of the game, always active at the bottom of the list |
| Programmer Art | The classic textures from before 1.14 |
| High Contrast | Higher contrast in menus and the interface |
How to install a texture pack in Minecraft Java
Download the pack as a .zip, open Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder, drop the file in, then move the pack to the "Selected" column and click Done. You don't need to unzip it.
- Download the pack from a trusted site (CurseForge, Modrinth or the creator's own page). Pick the file made for your Minecraft version.
- Start Minecraft and click Options → Resource Packs.
- Click Open Pack Folder. This opens the
resourcepacksfolder of your game. - Copy the
.zipfile into that folder. You can also drag the file onto the Resource Packs screen – Minecraft copies it for you. - Back in the game, the pack appears in the Available column on the left. Click it (or the arrow on its icon) to move it to Selected on the right.
- Click Done. The game reloads its resources, which can take a moment with big packs.
If you prefer to go to the folder yourself, it is inside the .minecraft folder:
| System | Resource pack folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%\.minecraft\resourcepacks |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/resourcepacks |
Using several packs at once? Packs higher in the "Selected" list win. If two packs change the same texture, the one on top is used. A common setup is a full texture pack at the bottom and a small pack (for example custom fonts or a different sky) above it.
Installing texture packs with CurseForge, Modrinth or Prism Launcher
In third-party launchers each profile (instance) has its own resourcepacks folder, so install the pack into the profile you actually play. The steps in game are the same.
- CurseForge App – open your profile, browse resource packs in the profile's content and click Install, or open the profile folder and drop the
.zipintoresourcepacks. - Modrinth App – open the instance, add content and pick resource packs, or open the instance folder and use its
resourcepacksfolder. - Prism Launcher – select the instance, click Edit → Resource packs → Add, or drag the file in.
Then select the pack in Options → Resource Packs as usual.
Why doesn't my texture pack work?
Most problems come from a pack made for a different Minecraft version, a zip inside a zip, or a pack that needs a mod. Here is how to tell which one it is.
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The pack is marked "Made for an older version of Minecraft" or "Made for a newer version" | The pack's format doesn't match your game version | Download the version of the pack made for your game. You can still enable it, but textures may be missing or look wrong |
| The pack doesn't appear in the list at all | The zip contains another folder or zip instead of pack.mcmeta at the top level |
Open the zip – if you see a single folder inside, unzip it and put that folder (or a new zip of its contents) in resourcepacks |
| Purple and black squares | Missing textures, usually a pack for another version | Get the pack for your version |
| Connected glass, random textures or custom models don't work | The pack needs a mod (for example OptiFine or a Fabric/NeoForge mod that adds these features) | Check the pack's page and install the mod it lists |
| The game is slow after enabling the pack | High-resolution packs (128x, 256x, 512x) need much more video memory | Try a 32x or 64x version of the pack |
Downloaded a .mcpack file? That's a Bedrock Edition pack. Java can't use it – look for the Java version of the pack.
How to install shaders in Minecraft
Shaders aren't resource packs: you need a shader mod first, such as Iris (for Fabric and NeoForge) or OptiFine, and then you put shader packs in the shaderpacks folder. Without a shader mod, the game has no shader packs menu.
- Install a mod loader and the shader mod for your Minecraft version – Iris Shaders is the most common choice on Fabric. How to install a mod loader is explained in How to install Minecraft mods.
- Start the game with that profile and open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.
- Click Open Shader Pack Folder, drop the shader
.zipin, and select it.
Shaders are heavy on the graphics card. If the frame rate drops a lot, choose a lighter shader or lower its quality profile.
How to add a resource pack to your Minecraft server
Upload the pack somewhere that gives a direct download link, put that link in resource-pack in server.properties, and add the pack's SHA-1 checksum in resource-pack-sha1. Every player then gets the pack when they join. A server resource pack is the only way to make all players see your custom textures, models or sounds.
These are the server.properties options for a server resource pack:
| Option | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
resource-pack |
Direct download URL of the .zip |
empty (no pack) |
resource-pack-sha1 |
SHA-1 checksum of the zip, in lowercase hex. Lets players reuse a cached copy and detects broken downloads | empty |
require-resource-pack |
true – players who decline the pack are disconnected |
false |
resource-pack-prompt |
Your own message in the download prompt | empty (default text) |
resource-pack-id |
Optional UUID that identifies the pack to players' games | empty |
Step 1: Host the pack with a direct link
The URL must download the zip directly – a link to a web page with a "Download" button won't work. Test it: paste the link into a browser's address bar, and it should start downloading the .zip straight away.
- Use a host that gives direct file links. Many cloud drives show a preview page instead of the file; some offer a direct-download variant of the link.
- The pack can be at most 250 MiB.
- When you change the pack, upload it under a new URL or update the checksum – otherwise players may keep the old cached copy.
Step 2: Calculate the SHA-1 checksum
Run one command on your computer and copy the 40-character result into resource-pack-sha1.
| System | Command |
|---|---|
| Windows (Command Prompt) | certutil -hashfile pack.zip SHA1 |
| macOS | shasum -a 1 pack.zip |
| Linux | sha1sum pack.zip |
Use lowercase letters and no spaces. If the checksum doesn't match the file, the server logs "Invalid sha1 for resource-pack-sha1" on startup and players may get a failed download.
Step 3: Set it up on a Spot.gg server
Open "Configuration" → "server.properties", search for resource-pack, fill in the URL and checksum, click "Save changes" and restart the server.
- In the server menu click "Configuration" and open the "server.properties" tab.
- Type
resource-packin the option search. - Paste the direct link into
resource-packand the checksum intoresource-pack-sha1. - Set
require-resource-packtotrueif the pack is essential (for example custom models your maps rely on). Leave itfalseif the pack is optional. - Optional: write a short message in
resource-pack-prompt, e.g. why the pack is needed. - Click "Save changes" and restart the server – the server reads these options on startup.
You can also edit the file directly in the "Files" tab. Join the server to test it: you should see the download prompt, and after accepting, the pack loads.
Common server resource pack problems
- "Failed to download resource pack" – the link isn't direct, has expired or needs a login. Test it in a private browser window.
- Players see the old version – you replaced the file but kept the same link and checksum. Update
resource-pack-sha1or use a new URL. - Players get disconnected right after joining –
require-resource-pack=trueand they declined the pack (or the download failed). Fix the link, or set it tofalsewhile testing. - Textures work for you but not for others – the pack is in your own
resourcepacksfolder, not set on the server. Only the server option sends it to everyone.
A server resource pack is sent to Java players. If Bedrock players join through Geyser, they need a Bedrock version of the pack, which Geyser handles separately.
FAQ
How do I install a texture pack in Minecraft?
Download the pack as a .zip, go to Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder, copy the file into that folder, then move the pack to the "Selected" column and click Done.
Do I need to unzip texture packs?
No. Minecraft reads the .zip directly. Only unzip it if the zip contains another folder inside instead of pack.mcmeta at the top.
Why does my texture pack say it was made for an older version?
The pack was made for a different Minecraft version than yours. You can still enable it, but some textures may be missing. Download the pack version made for your game.
Are texture packs and resource packs the same?
Yes. "Resource pack" is the current name in Minecraft Java. Resource packs can also change sounds, models and fonts, not only textures.
How do I make my server use a resource pack?
Put a direct download link to the zip in resource-pack in server.properties, add the SHA-1 checksum in resource-pack-sha1, and restart. Set require-resource-pack=true to make the pack mandatory.
Do texture packs work on servers?
Yes. Your own texture pack works on any server because it only changes your client. The server owner can also send a pack to everyone with the resource-pack option.
Do I need OptiFine for texture packs?
Not for normal packs. Only packs with special features (connected textures, custom item models based on names and similar) need OptiFine or a mod that adds those features. Check the pack's page.
