What is the latest Minecraft version?

The latest Minecraft: Java Edition release is 26.3 (Wilderness Bound), released on September 15, 2026. The next update, 26.4, is in development and available as snapshots.

Version Name Status
Latest release 26.3 Wilderness Bound Released September 15, 2026
Next update 26.4 Fourth Drop 2026 (working name) In snapshots – 26.4 Snapshot 7 is the newest at the time of writing

Checked on November 4, 2026, against the Minecraft Wiki's Java Edition version history. We update this page when a new version is released.

This page covers Java Edition (PC, Mac, Linux). Bedrock Edition (consoles, phones, Windows) has its own version numbers and release schedule.

What does the new Minecraft version number mean?

Since 2026 Java Edition versions use the format year.drop.hotfix: 26.3 means the third game drop of 2026, and 26.1.2 would be the second hotfix for the first drop. Mojang announced the change on December 2, 2025.

  • 26 – the year (2026).
  • 3 – the number of the drop in that year.
  • Hotfix number – added only for bug-fix releases, e.g. 26.1.1 and 26.1.2. A new drop starts without it (26.3, not 26.3.0).

The last version with the old "1." prefix was 1.21.11. So the order is 1.21.10 → 1.21.11 → 26.1 – there was no 1.22.

Snapshots changed too. Instead of codes like 25w41a, they are now named after the version they lead to, for example 26.4 Snapshot 1, followed by pre-releases and release candidates.

What was added in 26.1, 26.2 and 26.3?

26.1 Tiny Takeover gave every baby mob that didn't have one its own model and textures, added the golden dandelion and made name tags craftable. It was also the first version to require Java 25, and the launcher now ships Microsoft's build of OpenJDK 25 with the game.

26.2 Chaos Cubed added the sulfur caves biome with the sulfur cube mob, sulfur and cinnabar block sets, an experimental Vulkan renderer and an in-game friends list.

26.3 Wilderness Bound added the dappled forest biome with poplar wood, red shrubs and shelf mushrooms, wool and concrete stairs and slabs, straw beds, cushions and a new structure, the abandoned camp.

What is the next Minecraft update?

The next Java update is 26.4, the fourth drop of 2026, which is currently in snapshots. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. We don't guess an exact date – Mojang announces it shortly before release.

Features tested in the 26.4 snapshots so far include:

  • Ice caves – a new cave biome with icicles, ice crystals and crevasses of brittle ice that cracks when you stand on it.
  • The frostbite – a new mob, together with ice balls and a new Freezing effect (with potions and arrows of Freezing).
  • New building blocks – calcite stairs, slabs, walls and polished calcite bricks, snow bricks and packed ice bricks.
  • A new music disc, "flurry".

Snapshot content can still change or be removed before the release, so treat this list as a preview, not a promise.

Want to try the snapshots? In the official launcher go to Installations, tick Snapshots and create a new installation with the latest snapshot. Snapshots can corrupt worlds – always play them on a copy of your world, never on your main save or a public server.

How to check which Minecraft version you have

Your version is shown in the bottom-left corner of the title screen. In game, press F3 to see it at the top-left of the debug screen.

To get the newest release in the official launcher, use the Latest release installation – it updates by itself. If you play on a fixed version (for example for a modpack), that installation stays on its version until you change it under Installations.

How to update a Minecraft server to the latest version

Back up the world, update the server software to the new version, and check that your plugins or mods support it before players join. A server only accepts players on its own version, unless you add ViaVersion.

Before you update, check these three things:

  1. Plugins and mods. Paper plugins usually need an update for each drop, and big mods often take weeks or months. If one of your key plugins or mods isn't ready, wait.
  2. Java version. Minecraft 26.1 and newer need Java 25. Versions 1.20.5 to 1.21.11 run on Java 21.
  3. Backup. Updating is one way: once a world has been opened on 26.3, you can't safely go back to an older version.

Updating on Spot.gg

Go to "Information" → "Modify" → "Update", pick the new version and confirm – the world and your files stay. On a paid server, keep "Make a backup first" ticked; it creates a backup before the update starts.

  1. In the server menu open "Information" and click "Modify".
  2. Choose "Update" – a newer or older version of the current engine or pack.
  3. Pick the Minecraft version (and the build, if there are several).
  4. Leave "Make a backup first" on (recommended) and confirm. The panel stops the server and installs the new version.

The panel sets the right Java automatically when "Configuration" → "Server" → "JAVA version" is set to Auto (the default, shown as "Auto (Java 25)" on a 26.x server), so a 26.x server runs on Java 25 without you doing anything. You only need to touch this setting if a specific mod or plugin asks for a different Java version.

At the time of writing, Spot.gg has 26.3 builds of Vanilla, Paper, Purpur, Folia, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Hybrid engines (Mohist, Arclight, Magma) are still on 1.21.1 or older, which is normal – hybrids take longer to catch up.

Is going back to an older version possible? The "Update" option can also select an older version, but the panel warns that it is risky and may corrupt the map. Only downgrade with a backup you can restore. Backups are available on paid servers.

Should you update straight away?

Your server Recommendation
Vanilla, friends only Update soon after release – just make the backup
Paper or Purpur with plugins Update when your important plugins have builds for the new version
Fabric, Forge or NeoForge with your own mods Wait until all your mods are released for the new version
Modpack Stay on the pack's version – a modpack update comes from its creator, and you update the pack, not Minecraft

Let players on newer or older versions join

Install ViaVersion on a Paper server so players on a newer game version can join, and add ViaBackwards for older clients. This is handy right after a release, when part of your group has updated and part hasn't. How to set it up is in How to install ViaVersion. It doesn't work for modded servers – there, everyone needs exactly the server's version and mods.

FAQ

What is the newest version of Minecraft Java?

Minecraft Java 26.3, Wilderness Bound, released on September 15, 2026. The next update is 26.4, which is in snapshot testing.

What is the next Minecraft update?

Java Edition 26.4, the fourth drop of 2026. Snapshots so far add ice caves, the frostbite mob and the Freezing effect. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as planned for Q4 2026. No exact date had been announced when we checked – we'll update this page when it's out.

Why is Minecraft version 26 and not 1.22?

Since 2026 Java Edition uses the format year.drop.hotfix. 1.21.11 was the last version with the old numbering, and 26.1 came right after it.

What Java version does Minecraft 26.x need?

Java 25. The official launcher includes it automatically. Servers need Java 25 too – on Spot.gg the "Auto" Java setting picks it for you.

How do I update my Minecraft server without losing my world?

Make a backup, then update the server software to the new version and keep the same world folder. On Spot.gg use "Information" → "Modify" → "Update" with "Make a backup first" ticked; the world and files stay.

Can I play on an older Minecraft version?

Yes. In the official launcher create a new installation under "Installations" and pick the version. To join a server, your version has to match the server's, unless the server runs ViaVersion.
