What is Better MC (BMC)?
Better MC – also searched as "Better Minecraft" or "BMC" – is a Vanilla+ modpack series by LunaPixelStudios that keeps the feel of normal Minecraft but adds hundreds of mods: new biomes, dungeons, bosses, dimensions, quests and quality-of-life features. You still punch trees, mine and build like in vanilla; there's just far more to find. It's one of the most downloaded modpack families on CurseForge – BMC4 alone has passed 18.8 million downloads.
What every Better MC pack has in common:
- overhauled world generation – new biomes (Biomes O' Plenty, Oh The Biomes, Geophilic) and redesigned strongholds and fortresses,
- thousands of new structures and dungeons – When Dungeons Arise, YUNG's Better series, Moog's structures, AdoraBuild,
- new mobs and bosses – Alex's Mobs, Mowzie's Mobs, L_Ender's Cataclysm (depending on version),
- quality of life – Waystones for teleporting, XP Tomes, Xaero's Minimap, backpacks, Carry On and a quest book (FTB Quests),
- performance mods and shader presets included out of the box.
Careful with the name: "BMC - BetterMC" by a different author is an unrelated, much smaller pack. This guide covers the official Better MC series by LunaPixelStudios.
Which Better MC version should I choose? BMC1–BMC6 explained
For most players today the choice is BMC4 (Forge 1.20.1, the biggest and most played), BMC5 (NeoForge 1.21.1, newer Minecraft) or BMC6 (NeoForge 26.1.2, the newest but still growing). The numbering confuses people because Forge and Fabric editions are counted separately: Fabric BMC3 is Minecraft 1.21.1, while Forge BMC3 is 1.19.2.
Every current Better MC pack, from the CurseForge manifests (as of October 2026):
| Pack | Minecraft | Loader | Latest version | Mods | CurseForge downloads | Servers on Spot.gg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Better MC BMC6 | 26.1.2 | NeoForge | v7 (Oct 2026) | 268 | 116k | 20+ (new) |
| Better MC NeoForge BMC5 | 1.21.1 | NeoForge | v53 (Sep 2026) | 382 | 3.0M | 630 |
| Better MC Fabric BMC3 | 1.21.1 | Fabric | v45 (May 2026) | 371 | 1.5M | 67 |
| Better MC Forge BMC4 | 1.20.1 | Forge | v62 (Oct 2026) | ~425 | 18.8M | 4,400+ |
| Better MC Fabric BMC2 | 1.20.1 | Fabric | v40 (Jan 2026) | 395 | 2.2M | 21 |
| Better MC Forge BMC3 | 1.19.2 | Forge | v20 (Nov 2023) | 294 | 2.5M | 287 |
| Better MC Fabric BMC1 | 1.19.2 | Fabric | v20 (Nov 2023) | 297 | 7.9M | 1,150+ |
| Better MC Forge BMC2 | 1.18.2 | Forge | v20 (Jul 2023) | 235 | 2.5M | 10 |
| Better MC Forge BMC1 | 1.16.5 | Forge | v62 (Jun 2025) | 254 | 5.8M | 21 |
How to read it:
- Same Minecraft version, different loader = sister packs: Forge BMC3 ↔ Fabric BMC1 (1.19.2), BMC4 ↔ Fabric BMC2 (1.20.1), BMC5 ↔ Fabric BMC3 (1.21.1). The ideas are the same, but the mod lists differ, so a world from one can't be moved to the other.
- Still updated: BMC4, BMC5, BMC6, Fabric BMC2 and Fabric BMC3. The 1.16.5–1.19.2 packs are finished and only worth it for old PCs or nostalgia.
- There's also a spin-off, Better MC Skyblock (BMCS) on Forge 1.20.1, with a buy/sell shop and daily rewards.
What's the difference between BMC4, BMC5 and BMC6?
BMC4 has the most content (Twilight Forest, Blue Skies, Cataclysm, dragons, 14 quest chapters), BMC5 moves the formula to 1.21.1 with better performance, and BMC6 is a fresh start on Minecraft 26.1.2 with fewer mods so far. Comparison from the packs' manifests and quest files:
| BMC4 (Forge 1.20.1) | BMC5 (NeoForge 1.21.1) | BMC6 (NeoForge 26.1.2) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mods | ~425 | 382 | 268 |
| Quest chapters | 14 | 13 | 6 |
| Biomes | Biomes O' Plenty, Geophilic | Oh The Biomes We've Gone, Geophilic | Biomes O' Plenty, Geophilic, Tectonic |
| Dimensions | The Aether (+ Deep Aether, Aether: Redux), Twilight Forest, Blue Skies | The Aether (+ Deep Aether), Twilight Forest | The Aether II |
| Bosses and mobs | Cataclysm, Mowzie's Mobs, Alex's Mobs | Cataclysm, Mowzie's Mobs, Alex's Mobs | Alex's Mobs, Friends & Foes |
| Rideable dragons | Dragon Mounts: Legacy | Dragon Mounts Remastered | – |
| Performance and shaders | Oculus, ModernFix, FerriteCore | Sodium, Iris, Lithium, ModernFix | Sodium, Iris, Lithium, ModernFix |
| Vanilla backports | 1.20.2+ content | 1.21.2+ content | – (already the newest Minecraft) |
BMC4's quest book has chapters for the Overworld, Nether, End, Aether, Twilight Forest, Everbright and Everdawn (Blue Skies), Deeper and Darker, dragons, villagers, decoration, storage and "oddities". BMC6 starts smaller – tutorial, enchanting, archaeology, Aether II, fishing and storage – because many big mods haven't been updated to 26.1 yet. If you want the full adventure today, BMC4 or BMC5 is the safer bet; BMC6 is for players who want the newest Minecraft features.
Can you host a BMC6 server?
Yes – every BMC6 release from v2 to v7 has official server files on CurseForge, and BMC6 is available on Spot.gg like the other Better MC packs. When BMC6 first appeared, CurseForge's API marked it as not allowed for third-party distribution. The author has since enabled distribution, and server files are published alongside each version.
We test-boot every new pack version before offering it: BMC6 v5 and v6 passed, and over 20 servers have already been started with BMC6 on Spot.gg. Keep in mind that BMC6 updates often (a new version every one or two weeks in autumn 2026), so everyone in your group must keep the same version as the server.
How much RAM does Better MC need?
Give a Better MC server 8 GB for a small group and 10–12 GB for more players; on your PC allocate about 10 GB for BMC4, BMC5 or BMC6. The client RAM numbers come from the "recommended RAM" the author sets in each pack's manifest.
| Pack | PC (author's recommendation) | Server, 1–4 players | Server, 5+ players |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMC4 | ~10 GB | 8 GB | 10–12 GB |
| BMC5 | ~10.5 GB | 8 GB | 10–12 GB |
| BMC6 | ~10 GB | 8 GB | 10 GB |
| Fabric BMC3 | ~7 GB | 6–8 GB | 10 GB |
| Forge BMC1 | ~5.5 GB | 6 GB | 8 GB |
Real-world data: of the 4,400+ BMC4 servers started on Spot.gg, the most common choices were 6, 8 and 10 GB, with 12 GB next. 6 GB works for one or two players, but exploring with Waystones and generating lots of new structures is smoother with 8 GB or more. You can change RAM at any time in the panel.
How to make a Better MC server
Choose the Better MC pack you want when creating the server – it installs itself – and your friends join with the same version from the CurseForge App. BMC advertises built-in world sharing (in BMC6 it's the e4mc mod), but that only works while the host is in the game; a dedicated server keeps the world online for everyone, 24/7.
- Create a Spot.gg account and click "Activate a free server".
- Pick Minecraft and the Better MC edition – e.g. BMC4, BMC5 or BMC6. No file uploads needed.
- Set the RAM – modpack servers start at 6 GB (from $7.55 / month after the free trial); for Better MC choose 8 GB or more. You can change it later in the panel.
- In the panel, click "How to connect?" – you get step-by-step instructions: the CurseForge App, the pack name to search, the exact version and the server address to copy.
- Everyone installs that exact version in the CurseForge App, launches the game and goes to "Multiplayer" → "Add Server".
The first 24 hours are free, no card required – enough to check which BMC edition suits your group.
What are the most common Better MC server problems?
The number one problem is a version mismatch – for example, the CurseForge App installs BMC4 "v62hf", but the server runs v62. Hotfix releases like v62hf were published without server files, so servers stay on the last version that has them. Always install the version shown in "How to connect?".
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Error on join, list of missing mods | different BMC version than the server (e.g. v62hf vs v62) | install the exact version from "How to connect?" |
| "Incompatible" when switching packs | world created on another BMC edition | don't move worlds between BMC4/BMC5/BMC6 or Forge/Fabric – start a new world |
| Server boots slowly or stops during start | not enough RAM | raise server RAM to 8–10 GB |
| Stutters or out-of-memory crash in game | too little RAM allocated on the PC | set ~10 GB in the CurseForge App (or ~65% of your system RAM) |
| Server won't start after adding a mod | client-only mod or wrong loader (Fabric mod on Forge) | remove it from the mods folder in the "Files" tab |
Not sure what's going on? Check the "Errors" tab in the server panel or click "Ask the assistant" – the AI assistant reads the server logs and tells you what to fix. For more on mods, see how to make a modded Minecraft server, and for other packs, our list of the best Minecraft modpacks.
FAQ
What is the difference between BMC4 and BMC5?
BMC4 runs on Forge 1.20.1 and has more content (Twilight Forest, Blue Skies, Quark, 14 quest chapters). BMC5 runs on NeoForge 1.21.1, uses Sodium and Iris for better performance and includes 1.21.2+ backported content, with 13 quest chapters.
Is there a BMC6?
Yes. Better MC [BMC6] came out in 2026 for Minecraft 26.1.2 on NeoForge. It has about 270 mods so far and updates frequently.
Is Better MC Forge or Fabric?
Both – there are separate editions. Forge: BMC1 (1.16.5), BMC2 (1.18.2), BMC3 (1.19.2), BMC4 (1.20.1). Fabric: BMC1 (1.19.2), BMC2 (1.20.1), BMC3 (1.21.1). NeoForge: BMC5 (1.21.1) and BMC6 (26.1.2).
Which Better MC is the best?
